Fr Michael Gaughran

Fr Michael Gaughran died on 13 April 2008 in Broad Green Hospital, Liverpool. Born on 21 September 1935, he was educated at St Francis College, Letchworth, Herts., and St Edmund's College, Ware, Herts. After training as a solicitor, he came to St Columban's, Dalgan Park, Navan, in 1964 and was ordained priest on 22 December 1969 at Gravesend, Kent. After post-graduate studies in Rome, he taught in St Peter's College, Wexford 1972-'73, and in Dalgan from 1973-'76. Subsequently he served in St Bede's Parish, Widnes, St Laurence's Parish, Birkenhead, and in parishes of the Dioceses of Menevia and Shrewsbury. In 1995 he was seconded to work full time for the Marian Movement of Priests. He worked zealously to promote this movement, travelling all over the world in response to invitations to give retreats and lectures. In January of this year, he was diagnosed as having a leaking heart valve. After surgery in early April, he caught an infection and never recovered. Michael had a deep devotion to the Eucharist and to Our Blessed Lady. A good-humoured gentleman, he bore his sufferings with patience and courage. He was buried in Waterloo, Liverpool on 22 April 2008.

May he rest in peace.
