On the 11th of July 2003, a World Trade Organization disputes panel, convened at the joint request of Brazil, China, the European Union, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Norway and Switzerland, ruled that the safeguard measures imposed by the US on imports of 10 steel products violate multilateral trading rules. The panel accepted the main arguments put forward by the countries concerned. The Brazilian government are pleased with the decision of the panel and express the hope that the US will swiftly revoke the safeguard measures that are deemed to be incompatible with the global trade rules of the WTO. The safeguard measures have been in place since the 5th of March 2002. ------------------------- Source: Brazilian Ministry for Foreign Relations
